A major breakthrough in thalassaemia treatment occurred when the U.S. FDA approved the drug mitapivat (brand name Aqvesme) as the first oral treatment for anaemia in adults with alpha- or beta-thalassaemia.
For decades, many patients with severe thalassaemia have relied on regular blood transfusions to manage anaemia. The new medication works by improving the energy production inside red blood cells, which helps increase haemoglobin levels and reduce symptoms.
Clinical trials showed that patients taking the medication experienced significant improvements in haemoglobin levels, making it a promising new treatment option for people living with the disease.
Why this matters
- First oral medication for thalassaemia-related anaemia
- May reduce dependence on frequent blood transfusions
- Represents a major step forward in patient quality of life
