About us

Who we are & what we do

What does "Muskaan" mean?

"Muskaan" means smile in Hindi, Urdu, and Gujarati. Our name reflects what we hope to bring to whānau we serve.

Are you a religious organisation?

No. We're a secular charity. We welcome people of all faiths and no faith.

Are you only for South Asian communities?

No. We serve everyone across Aotearoa. Our founders came from South Asian backgrounds, and we have strong ties to migrant and refugee communities, but the door is open to anyone.

Is TASCA NZ the same as Muskaan Care Trust?

TASCA NZ (Thalassaemia and Sickle Cell Aotearoa NZ) is our flagship programme. Muskaan Care Trust is the parent organisation that runs TASCA NZ plus a broader set of community programmes.

How many people work here?

We have a small core team of staff and contractors, supported by 24+ active volunteers and a board of unpaid trustees.

Getting support

If you need help

Do I need to have a specific condition to contact you?

No. We're happy to talk to anyone affected by thalassaemia, sickle cell, or any of the other conditions we work with. Family members, partners, carers, and even curious community members are welcome.

Do I need a referral?

No. Just call, message, or email us directly.

Is your support free?

Yes, all our services are free, always. We're funded by donations, grants, and government contracts.

Do you speak languages other than English?

Yes, across our team and volunteers we speak Hindi, Urdu, Samoan, Tongan, Mandarin Chinese, and te reo Māori. We use professional interpreters for any other language.

Are you connected to my hospital?

Probably. We have working relationships with most NZ tertiary haematology services. We can advocate alongside your existing care team.

Donations

Giving & finances

Are my donations tax-deductible?

Yes, for donations $5 and above, you can claim a tax credit through Inland Revenue. We issue receipts automatically.

Where does my donation go?

88¢ of every dollar goes directly to programmes. See our Financial Transparency page for the full breakdown.

Can I donate anonymously?

Absolutely. We respect privacy, for donations, bequests, and tributes.

Can I cancel my monthly donation?

Yes, anytime, no questions asked. Email us or log into your donor portal.

Are you a registered charity?

Yes, registered with Charities Services (CC51234). All financial information is public.

Volunteering

Getting involved

How do I become a volunteer?

See our Volunteer page for current roles. Application takes 5 minutes.

Do I need experience?

For most roles, no. We provide training and a buddy mentor.

Can I volunteer remotely?

Yes, for translation, social media, awareness, and admin roles.

How can my workplace get involved?
